Be Ready for More Taxes in 2011
Published: 3/9/2010 12:13:40 PM
In a rather surreal hearing during the Special Session last month, Senators from both sides of the aisle berated business and gaming lobbyists for saying "no" to new taxes.
The dialogue reminded me of the contentious 2003 session that pitted...

Traffic surveillance cameras might not be worth the wrath they incur
Published: Mon, 22 Feb 2010 06:09:23 +0000Let’s face it, when you’re broke, you do things you wouldn’t otherwise do. Reid defends record of bringing money to the state; blames Carson City for leaving federal funding on the table
Published: Wed, 10 Mar 2010 19:49:00 GMTU.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., today sought to undermine claims by his political opponents that he fails to deliver funding for Nevada despite being majority leader. Instead, he used a Las Vegas Sun story to blame Carson City lawmakers and agencies for "leaving money on the table" when it comes to services for the needy.
The Sun story quotes a new Brookings Institution report that ranked Nevada "dead last in per-capita federal funding" for health, education and transportation services. The report will no doubt add fuel to the fire being built by Reid's opponents, who point to Nevada's dismal federal funding as a mark that Reid does not use his leadership position to provide for the state.
In a memo to "interested parties" today, Reid's staff sought to shift the blame to Carson City, noting that policy makers have created a barebones social safety net, which dramatically reduces the amount of federal funding the state is eligible for.
The memo also touts Reid's record of winning more earmarks for Nevada than the rest of the state's delegation combined and uses figures from the IRS and Census to determine the state gets 97 cents back for every tax dollar paid by Nevadans.
